After a scenic drive to Rongai Gate (1,950m), begin a gentle trek through pine plantations and lush forest. Watch for Colobus monkeys and colorful mountain birds along the way. The trail gradually ascends to Simba Camp (2,600m), where stunning views, peaceful surroundings, and a warm dinner await.

We continue a steady ascent into Kilimanjaro’s moorland zone, where forests give way to open landscapes and sweeping views of Kibo and its ice fields. Vegetation shifts to heather and wild herbs as the terrain becomes rockier. Arriving at Second Cave (3,450m), the summit feels closer and more inspiring.

Today we cross Kilimanjaro’s moorland toward Mawenzi, a day focused on acclimatization and exploration. The landscape opens into rugged valleys with Giant Groundsels and striking rocky ridges. Temperatures drop as altitude rises. We reach Kikelewa Camp (3,600m), a sheltered valley campsite beneath some of Africa’s brightest night skies at night.

A short but steep climb leads to Mawenzi Tarn, one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic campsites, set beneath the dramatic towers of Mawenzi. Vegetation fades into alpine desert, revealing vast rocky landscapes and thin, crisp air. Here, you rest, enjoy hot tea, and take in the quiet beauty of this high-altitude wilderness.

Today we cross the vast Saddle, a silent, high-altitude desert between Mawenzi and Kibo. The landscape is flat, dry, and surreal, with the summit cone growing larger ahead. The “pole pole” rhythm guides your steps until you reach Kibo Hut (4,700m), where preparation for the final summit push begins.

The final summit push begins at midnight, climbing steep volcanic scree under the glow of headlamps toward the crater rim. At Gilman’s Point, dawn breaks, revealing glowing glaciers and breathtaking views. Reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m) is a moment of triumph before a long descent through forest back to Marangu Gate.
